Lady Cards claim district crown, fifth consecutive title

In front of a large crowd inside the Cardinal Dome, the Lady Cardinals swept their way to a district title for the fifth consecutive year and six of the last seven.

With the exception of last year, Webb City and Carl Junction have now faced each other each year in the district finals since 2019.  Last years foe was Marshfield, the same opponent now waiting on Saturday to host the Cardinals with a trip to the final four on the line.

The finals scores of each set do not necessarily reflect upon the way that Webb City kept Carl Junction at bay.  The Cardinals only trailed on the scoreboard twice in the three game sweep.

In the first set, Webb City fell into a brief 4-3 deficit.  After siding out evening the score at four and Avery Pogue serving, the Cardinals went on a 6-0 run.  Kaelyn Maxwell downed a short return over the net, then blocked the next kill attempt for a point and recorded a kill for the third point.  Jaylee VanBecelaere got a kill of her own and the back to back aces from Pogue gave the Cardinals a 10-4 lead, that then balloned to 16-5.  Not going away quietly, Carl Juntion got themselves to within a single point at 19-18, but the Cardinals kept them on the short side of the score and finished off a 25-21 first set win.

The Bulldogs scored the first point of set two, but the Lady Cardinals outscored CJ 19-9 over the next few minutes to grab the lead they wouldn't relinquish as they claimed that set 25-18.  Kaelyn Maxwell and Marlee Harper each had three kills in the early scoring spree.

Set three played out much the same way.  At 2-2, the Cardinals scored seven of the next eight and never let the Bulldogs closer than four points the rest of the way. The final two points for the Cardinals highlighted the net dominance they had during the night.  Jocelyn Maxwell and Marlee Harper combined to block the Bulldog kill attempts.

Adelyn Maxwell and Kaelyn Maxwell each recorded nine kills, Jaylee VanBecelaere with eight to lead the Cardinal attack.  Savannah Crane dished out 28 assists on the night and snuck in three kills of her own. Defensively, Avery Gardner had 29 digs with VanBecelaere, Avery Pogue and Allie Collard joining in with 9, 8 and 7 , respectively.

The Lady Cardinals will travel to Marshfield next Saturday
