Cards frustrate Tigers, thrill homecoming crowd

Carson Anderson sent the homecoming crowd into euphoria hitting a three from in front of the Cardinal bench in the final second for a 49-48 win.

The Cardinals used a 9-1 run to close the first quarter and take a 16-8 lead after the first.  Tied at seven, Hudson Matthiesen drilled a three followed by a bucket and three free throws from Jackson Adams and finished with a free throw from Anderson closed the spree.

It took nearly four minutes for either team to score in the second.  In the final 90 seconds though Carson Anderson and Trae Turner hit back to back three's to give the Cardinals their biggest lead at 24-12.  However, the Tigers nailed a long one as the half time horn sounded sending the teams to the locker room with Webb leading 24-15.

The third period found the Tigers heating up from long range and closing to a single point.  Back to back steals and layups from Turner and Adams put the Cardinals back up by five.  Two more threes from Tigers surrounded a dunk from Turner and the third quarter ended with the Cardinals holding a 33-32 advantage.

The Tigers finally caught Webb City midway through the final period and the back and forth for the remainder of the game left the Cardinals trailing by one with only two minutes left.  The Cardinals were forced to foul and send the Tigers to free throw line.  They were only to hit three of six, missing their last at the ten second mark.  After Adams rebounded the miss, a timeout with 5.5 seconds left set up the final play.

Inbounding at mid-court, Matthiesen took the pass and threw cross court to a wide open Anderson who rose and found nothing but net.   As the crowd celebrated, the officials put a few ticks back on the clock setting it at .9 seconds.  A long inbound pass was knock away and the horn finally sounded on the Cardinals conference opening win.

Hudson Mathiesen led with 13 points, followed by Trae Turner with 11.  The balanced scoring also showed Holden Johnson with nine and seven each from Carson Anderson and Jackson Adams.

Webb City (12-8, 1-0) will be at Carthage on Tuesday
