In front of a large boisterous crowd, Webb City toppled top seeded Central 68-61 advancing to the district championship game.
Central looked the part of the number one seed for most of the first half. Vaulting out to a 9-2 lead midway through the first quarter, the Bulldogs held a 14-4 lead after one. Seemingly still in control with a 25-17 lead, the Cardinals turned the momentum and closed on a 9-0 run, punctuated with a buzzer beating three from Eli Pace, taking a 26-25 lead at half.
The third quarter was a back and forth affair with eight different lead changes. The turning point may have been when Holton Keith picked up foul number four only three minutes into the quarter. Holden Johnson came in and promptly hit a corner three and three minutes later gave the Cardinals their biggerst lead, 41-37, driving baseline and scoring a short jumper. Central responded, scoring the next six points and thought they had a two point lead to end the quarter. However, fate was once again on the home side, as another buzzer beater, this one from Trae Turner from near mid court, put the Cardinals back in front 44-43. Webb City had seized the momentum once again.
Central stayed within striking distance and took their last lead, 49-48 with four minutes left. Eli Pace and Holton Keith took over, scoring the next seven points, to put the Cardinals out in front for the final time with only two minutes left. The Cardinals finished it out from the free throw line, hitting 13 of 18 as the Bulldogs were forced to foul.
Holton Keith topped the scoring column with 23 points and a team best 6 rebounds. Eli Pace followed closely with 21, shooting 10-12 from the free throw line. Trae Turner also hit double figures at 12 and recorded four steals on the night.
The Cardinals will now take on Parkview in the championship game on Monday night at 6:00.
