Webb City rolls on to semi-final with win over the Sullivan Eagles 35-6
Playing for the final time on their "home turf" 31 seniors said "good-bye" in thrilling fashion with a 35-7 victory over previously undefeated Sullivan. Not one but two Special Teams plays broke the game open. The first came as the Eagles lined up to kick a FG to close the gap to 14-3, but Sr Nate Brown broke thru the line and blocked the FG attempt and fellow Sr Phoenix Johnson scooped it up and raced 77 yards to thwart the comeback attempt and make the score 21-0. On the next possession as the Eagles lined up to punt, Nate Brown, again, ran through and blocked the punt and Sr, Dalton Humphrey recovered. One play later, Sr Cooper Smith scored from 22 yards out giving the Cardinals a 28-0 lead that they never gave up.
The offense played well, but didn't have the same numbers rushing for 239 yards. Cooper Smith led all rushers with 81 yards on 8 carries and the one TD. Phoenix Johnson had 10 carries for 39 yards and a TD and Sr QB John Roderique had 3 carries for 38 yards. Roderique didn't have to throw, but he was a perfect 3 for 3 for 78 yards and a 33 yard TD to Sr Kohl Slaughter.
The defense again held firm while the Eagles put up a fight. They allowed a late TD in the 4th quarter, but allowed only 119 yards rushing and 73 passing for a team that had outscored opponents an average of 49-7 in the previous 12 games. Sullivan's head coach was quoted as saying …"the Webb City defense is the fastest team that we have played in a long, long time."
Up next, a long trip to St Louis to take on the St. Mary's Dragons for the chance to play for an 11th State Championship . A private school that finished 7-2 in the regular season but has busted through the gates in the playoffs beating their 4 opponents by an average score of 44-12 only giving up 6 points twice. The game will be held at St. Mary's High School, 4701 S Grand Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63111-1498. Tickets may be purchased at the game and before the game at the High School, Central Office, Mid-Mo Bank and SMB. Tickets are $6 for the game.
