Cardinals walk off the Pirates, advance to district finals

Down to the their last three outs, the Cardinals put together a dramatic walk off victory over the Belton Pirates on Thursday.  With the win the Cardinals advance to the district finals seeking their fourth consecutive title.

For the third year in a row, the Pirates and Cardinals faced off in the district semi finals.   The Cardinals called upon Landon Fletcher to face off with Tennessee bound Cooper Shrum in what was expected to be a low scoring game.

Webb City struck first in the bottom of the second.  Luke Beverlin drew a one out walk, advancing to second on a Brody Eggleston single to left.  One out later, Cohen Epler ripped a single down the left field line driving in Beverlin.

The Pirates countered in the top of the next inning.  A double to left was followed by a bunt single that hugged the line all the first base putting runners on the corner.  A squeeze bunt scored the first run and a two out base hit scored the second.  The PIrates led 2-1.

The next couple of innings went by with no real threat by either team as the two pitchers mowed their way through the batting order.

Trailing by one in the bottom of the seventh, Karsen Myers was hit by the first pitch of the inning, representing the tying run.  A sac bunt from Cohen Epler and a wild pitch moved him all the way to third.  Braden Strickland was also hit by a pitch, putting both the game tying and game ending runs on the corners.  With two strikes, Andrew Young shot a single over the short stops head scoring Myers to tie the game and advancing Strickland to second.  Mason Williams with a soft single to center loaded the bases forcing a pitching change.  With the bases loaded and the Pirate infield playing in, Brock Renfro drilled the game winner past the first baseman and the Cardinals had the 3-2 win.

Brody Eggleston had a pair of hits to lead the Cardinals as they finished with six.

Landon Fletcher earned the complete game victory, striking out 10, scattering four hits.

The win advances the Cardinals to the Class 5 Distric7 finals where they will face the Carl Junction Bulldogs in a rematch of last years finals.
