Cardinals fall to 1-1 with early morning loss

Cardinals fall to 1-1 with early morning loss

Getting on a bus less than 12 hours after capturing your home opener, the Cardinals headed east to take on Logan Rogersville with a 9:00 am start.  A cool morning with a stiff wind blowing, there were only six hits in the game.  All of the scoring occurred in the fourth and fifth innings as Webb City fell 5-4 to the Wildcats.

During the first three innings, the Cardinals were the only team that threatened to score.  In the top of the first, a two out walk to Brock Renfro was followed by a Brody Eggleston single,  putting runners on the corners.  A strike out ended the opportunity.  The Wildcats only found themselves with one base runner, a first inning walk.

In the fourth, Webb City scored twice without putting a ball into play.  Two hit batters, three walks and two wild pitches put the Cardinal ahead 2-0.  Log-Rog answered right back on a single, double and a throwing error and the score was knotted up at 2-2.

Opening the fifth with a walk to Karsen Myers and, one out later, Brock Renfro being hit by a pitch gave the Cardinals two base runners once again.  A Cohen Epler double deep to left center brought both of them home and put Webb City back on top 4-2.

The Wildats had an answer. With one out, a double to right and walk put the tying runs on base, forcing the Cardinals into a pitching change.  A single scored the first run but a throwing error allowed both runners to move up to second and third.  A ground out scored the tying run, leaving the Wildcats with a runner on third and two outs.  A wild pitch to the next hitter allowed the winning run to come home.

Webb City kept putting runners on base over the sixth and seventh inning, but stranded two in the sixth and left the base loaded as the game ended.

The Wildcats gave the Cardinals a dozen free base runners with nine walks and three hit batters, but the Cardinals were only able to muster two hits, one each from Brody Eggleston and Cohen Epler, stranding 10 runners on the day.

Starting pitcher Landon Fletcher worked the first 4.1, striking out eight with only two walks.  Tate Lewis took the loss in relief, working the final 1.2, picking up three strike outs.

Webb City will be back at home on Tuesday, when they entertain John Hersey from the Chicago Illinois area.
