Cardinals win district opener

Cardinals win district opener

The Cardinals beat Republic 10-0 in five innings to open district play.

Scott Roderique reached on an error to start the bottom of the first and Breckin Williams followed with a single to left.  Tyler Burgess then launched a double over the right fielders head to score both runners.  Gage Belcher singled in Keaton Teal, running for Burgess, with a single to right.

After being held scoreless in innings two and three, the Cardinals put up four runs in the fourth, all with two outs.  Derek Mann hustled a double after hitting a fly ball to short center that could not be caught and Richie Peoples drove him home with a triple to right center.  Roderique walked and Williams singled scoring Peoples.  Burgess then singled to second driving in Roderique and after the ball got away from the Tiger first baseman, Williams scored the fourth run of the inning.

After Belcher reached on an error to start the fifth, Klay James singled, Mann tripled and DH Jeremy West ended the game with a single to left as the Cardinals won 10-0.

Mann, with a double and triple, Williams and Burgess each finished with two hits.  Burgess finished with three RBI.

Tyler Burgess struck out 7 and didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning.

The Cardinals, ranked 8th in the final state poll, will play a semi-final game on Monday.  The game time and opponent will be determined later Saturday afternoon.
